The Laboratory for Educational Theory at the School of Education

INTERNATIONAL DOCTORAL SUMMER SCHOOL:

THEORISING THE POLITICAL AND THE ETHICAL IN DOCTORAL RESEARCH IN EDUCATION

UNIVERSITY OF STIRLING, SCOTLAND, UK

Sunday 3rd July– Thursday 7th July 2011

The Laboratory for Educational Theory at the School of Education was established in 2008 with the ambition to create opportunities for researchers, students, practitioners and others to explore the roles of theory in educational research and educational practice and to engage in theory development and capacity building. The Laboratory for Educational Theory is co-ordinated by Professors Gert Biesta (gert.biesta@stir.ac.uk) and Julie Allan in collaboration with colleagues from the School of Education.

As part of its programme of activities, the Laboratory for Educational Theory is hosting its second international doctoral summer school from Sunday 3rd July – Thursday 7th July 2011. The theme for the summer school is ‘Theorising the political and the ethical in doctoral research in education’ and is particularly targeted at doctoral students from the UK and abroad whose projects engage with questions about the ethical and political dimensions of educational processes and practices. Such projects can either be of a theoretical nature or they can be empirical projects with a strong theoretical component.

Theory plays an important role at the School of Education. Our work covers the whole range of educational settings and practices (from pre-school, school, college and university to adult education, work-based learning and lifelong learning), engages with a wide range of theories and philosophies (complexity theory; social capital; educational theory; post-modern and post-structural theory and philosophy; pragmatism; critical realism; feminism; socio-cultural theory), and focuses on a range of educational topics and issues (pedagogy; curriculum; teaching and learning; inclusion; identity; emancipation; educational alternatives). At the School of Education we believe in theory. Theory can help to think differently, which often is a crucial condition for being able to think at all. It can help to ask new, different and critical questions. Theory is important in its own right and for the conduct of empirical research.

The doctoral summer school consists of an intensive programme of lectures, seminars, discussion sessions and student presentations, with ample opportunities for informal interaction and discussion. Lectures and seminars focus on key notions such as democracy, emancipation, responsibility and inclusion and how these play out in educational processes and practices. The central question will be about the theories and forms of theorisation that are most appropriate for engaging with these issues in doctoral research in education. Through discussion sessions and student presentations participants will be able to engage actively with the programme and make productive connections with their own projects. There is a maximum of 20 places available on the programme. Participants will receive a certificate of attendance. The summer school will be led by Professors Julie Allan and Gert Biesta, with contributions from other colleagues from the School of Education.

Applications can be submitted between 1 December 2010 and 31 January 2011. Further information will be made available on the website of the Laboratory for Educational Theory
