BBC Learning English

Internet TESL Journal’s Self-Study Quizzes for ESL Students contains many simple exercises grouped by level.

Self-Study Quizzes for ESL Students contains a huge number of graded activities, including a list of bilingual exercises for users from many different languages (for those who are using portable devices or computers that cannot use the Flash plugin or do not support JavaScript, use this link : http://a4esl.org/q/h).

Warwickblogs features podcasts from the University of Warwick consisting of short interviews on a wide range of subjects.

University of California Berkeley's Institute of International Studies: Conversations with History presents recordings of interviews and lectures from famous politicians, scholars, writers from around the world.

Speaking

Sounds of English explanations (with diagrams) of British English sounds with practice exercises.

schMOOze University has a live chat site for learners of English.

Pronunciation

International Phonetic Association provides lots of links and information, including Phonetic Fonts for Windows and Mackintosh.

Reading

The ESL Reading Index at Gallaudet University (USA) offers instruction on effective reading including practice exercises, plus links to other reading sites.

Scholarly Journals via the WWW provides a link to academic journals in electronic format in a wide range of academic subjects.

Nature and Scientific American are good sources of reading material for students in the sciences.

At BBC News and BBC World Service News you can read (and listen to) up-to-date news and also take part in a discussion through 'Talking Point'.

The Bangkok Post will help you learn to read an English newspaper. Includes links to many other EFL sites.

Student connections with the New York Times: The news articles at this web site include a "Word of the Day" with a test quiz as well as "News Summaries" you can study and compare with the longer articles.

Visit Great Books Online from the Bartleby Library if you’re looking for something to read.

Candlelight Stories allows you to travel through the world of illustrated stories, animations, cartoons, music and games from artists around the globe (there is a limited amount of 'Free Stuff'; the rest is members-only).

English Poetry Database is a full-text searchable database of hundreds of poems.

Internet Poetry Archive offers a selection of poems from a number of contemporary poets.

Virtual Library: Theatre & Drama contains resources for theatre including complete texts of plays in different languages.

Drew's Scripts-O-Rama is the most comprehensive collection of screenplays anywhere on the Net.

Mystery-Net.com has mini-mysteries. Choose Solve-it and read carefully and look at the scene of the crime for clues that will solve the mysteries.

Writing

Dictionaries

Cambridge Dictionaries searches in the Cambridge Dictionaries for Learners, Advanced Learners, Phrasal Verbs, Idioms and American English (and also bilingual French and Spanish versions).

Longman Web Dictionary an on-line version of the Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English; quick and convenient. Includes British and American English.

iTools is a collection of search, research, translation and dictionary tools

Foreignword.com searches 275 dictionaries on the Internet and allows you to translate from 69 into 73 languages.

VoyCabulary turns the words on any web page into links that you can look up in a collection of dictionaries.

Information / Resources for TEFL Teachers

IATEFL is the home page of The International Association of Teachers of English as a Foreign Language.

SATEFL is the home page of The Scottish Association of Teachers of English as a Foreign Language. Features a Jobshop!

BALEAP is the home page of the British Association of Lecturers in English for Academic Purposes. Features an email discussion list and a link to EAP web sites.

The British Council website has information on teaching vacancies in its teaching centres around the world; support to British ELT and the English in Britain Accreditation Scheme; English language examinations; and teacher networks, including the highly successful English Language Teaching Contacts Scheme.

Dave's ESL Cafe features a Chat Central; Discussion Forum and a Job Center.

OneStop English by Macmillan Publishers offers articles on teaching, lesson plans, games, and a Job Shop.

Teaching English provides a range of services including weekly updated articles on methodology, activities to try out and lesson plans complete with materials. There is also a community of language teachers who use the 'Talk' section to exchange ideas and opinions on ELT.

Language Assistants The language assistants' site was designed specifically to support English native speakers going abroad to work as language assistants, but it is also of use to those working in the field of EFL. The site has regularly updated teaching tips and links and materials that focus on developing understanding of UK culture. There is also a free downloadable teaching manual, which would be ideal for novice teachers.

Search English is a powerful search engine and community building tool that draws on databases of ELT news related articles and ELT journals. The site enables registered users to set up ongoing search queries and receive updates by email. As well as this, the site offers a number of community building features including forums and groups which can be used create special interest communities to store and exchange documents as well as ideas and opinions.
